Alberto is non-traditional, parenting student who transferred from Santa Barbara City College (SBCC). While incarcerated, he was fortunate to serve time at a prison that offered college courses and eventually earned an associate degree through the prison college program. After serving a sentence of 13 years, he walked out of prison in 2016 knowing that education was his redemption and salvation. He immediately enrolled into SBCC and was introduced to the Underground Scholars Initiative (USI) at Berkeley and became an ambassador for the group. He was accepted to all the schools he applied to as an Art major and committed to UCLA after meeting the USI members there. Some of the biggest motivators in his life are his wife and his 13-year-old son. Although he has extra responsibilities as a student, he believes that family, community, and fellowship help guide him through this process, and he deeply appreciates the second chance he has received at life.
